Random and Insertional Mutagenesis for Functional Genomics in Plants

The turn around time of structural genomics in plants and animals has been coming down in exponential manner since the advent of New Generation Sequencing technology. However, the functional genomics is not keeping pace with the advancement of structural genomics. Mutagenesis, both random and insertional, is one of the important means for functional genomics of all organisms.
SNPs in Complex Plant Genomes - Discovery and Genotyping

Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies have made whole genome sequencing and SNP discovery in many crop species possible. Still there are a lot of issues to be resolved in complex genomes, which is more prevalent in angiosperms, regarding sequencing and SNP discovery . These issues and the way forward are discussed in this article.
Role of Functional Markers in Plant Breeding

Functional markers are developed from polymorphic sites within genes that causally affect target trait variation i.e based on functional characterization of the polymorphisms (Anderson and Lubberstedt 2003). Hence they are more meaningful in plant breeding than random genetic markers. The utilities and limitations of functional markers is discussed here.
