Apomixis lines are developed typically through basic approaches such as gene transfer from wild species source, via induced mutation and selection for apomictic genotype in segregating generation of interspecific hybrid. Because of its potential for crop improvement and global agricultural production, apomixis is now receiving increasing attention from both scientific and industrial sectors. Harnessing apomixis is a major goal in applied plant genetic engineering. In this regard, efforts are focused on genetic and breeding strategies in various plant species, combined with molecular methods to analyse apomictic and sexual modes of reproduction and to identify key regulatory genes and mechanisms underlying these processes.
Allele mining plays an important role in realizing the worth of the plant genetic resources (PGR). Discovery and utilization of superior alleles through allele mining for disease resistance, drought tolerance etc. may contribute significantly to secure the future food basket. However, it face challenges in its efficient use for crop improvement.
